<div id="_mcePaste"><strong><span style="font-size: medium;">February 08, 2010, New Delhi: </span></strong><span style="font-size: medium;">India’s most prestigious theatre honour recorded the highest number of entries in its last 5 years – for  META 2010.<br />

<div><span style="font-size: medium;"><br />
 </span></div>
<div id="_mcePaste"><span style="font-size: medium;">He added, &#8220;<em>This is a very prestigious moment not only for META but also for Indian theatre. <div id="_mcePaste"><span style="font-size: medium;"><a rel="attachment wp-att-1548" href="http://www.metawards.com/plays/2010/roop-aroop-3/attachment/rooparoop-4-2/"><img class="alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-1548" title="rooparoop 4" src="http://www.metawards.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/rooparoop-41-100x100.jpg" alt="" width="100" height="100" /></a>This play has the popular performing tradition of “NAUTANKI” as its backdrop. Till a few years ago (and in some parts even today) men adorn the female persona which is passed on from generation to generation. However, towards the middle of the previous century women set foot on this stage. Most of them were from the “BEDIN” community who are singers and dancers by caste and birth. They perform in festivals and occasions like marriage. The stage was a distant dream, it meant dignity as performer. The tussle between the accomplished male actor and the aspiring woman entrails could not have been an easy one. This is an attempt by two young actors to explore some human dimensions of this phenomenon. The man may exit but the popular female persona continues to persist.</span></div>
<div><span style="font-size: medium;"><br />
 </span></div>
<div id="_mcePaste"><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>Director&#8217;s Note:</strong></span></div>
<div id="_mcePaste"><span style="font-size: medium;">The male actor must give up his place where the woman steps on the stage to stake her claim to the space hitherto denied to her. Reality invades the notional, non real and the crafted world of image. An era is started in to the truth and inevitability of its closure. The struggle to perpetuate its creative span weaves a yarn of many shades. Transience prevails and each one of us must yield, almost as if to the compulsion of death as it which overtakes life in the ultimate chain of recycle. Yet undeniably the pain of displacement is real. <em>Roop Aroop</em> is about that moment that shifts a fleeting span of creative glimpse that nevertheless leaves its mark on times that ensue. It was the team from my earlier play<em> Rangdhuli</em> that inspired and lead to the creation of <em>Roop Aroop</em>.</span></div>

The play flashes back to the early &#8217;70s when Vijay Tendulkar’s classic, <em>Sakharam Binder</em>, set off a storm of controversy in the theatre scene. The stage censor board came down heavily on the script, and the play was attacked by sections of society. The unusual story of <em>Sakharam Binder,</em> the parallel world of tamasha, and the amazing spirit of the &#8217;70s  all make up an exciting mix of theatre, memory, live music, dance, and video. The show provokes challenges, entertains, and asks the question – who says NO? And why?</span></div>
<div><span style="font-size: medium;"><br />
 </span></div>
<div id="_mcePaste"><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>Director’s Note:</strong></span></div>
<div id="_mcePaste"><span style="font-size: medium;">The play came out of a desire to explore one of the most immediate and contentious issues of our times, morality and censorship. What began as a small idea to explore the idea of censorship grew over a period of research into a much larger canvas that looked at tolerance, intolerance, cultural resistance, the state and the law, and changing cultural practices, within the context of theatre and popular arts practice, primarily in Maharashtra in the 1970s.  For me as a director the challenge lay in making what was essentially a play of ideas and discussion into something that was theatrically viable and accessible. It took many months of work by a group of uniquely talented people: writers, translators, choreographers, musicians, poets, researchers, designers, composers and production people. We are deeply grateful for their contribution. We are also grateful to the India Foundation for the Arts that saw sense in our early groping and supported this enterprise.</span></div>

<div id="_mcePaste"><span style="font-size: medium;"><a rel="attachment wp-att-1439" href="http://www.metawards.com/plays/2010/white-lily-aani-night-rider/attachment/white-lily-aani-night-rider3/"><img class="alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-1439" src="http://www.metawards.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/white-lily-aani-night-rider3-100x100.jpg" alt="" width="100" height="100" /></a>The play is the contemporary play &#8211; a black comedy &#8211; of a man &amp; a woman in their 40’s. They are very close Chat Friends involved even in erotic chat. At one point of time they desperately want to meet each other to transform that virtual reality in to reality and may take the decision of marriage. But when they in person, the showdown begins. Any known system of man – woman relationship is unacceptable to them. Neither can they accept the Sanskars of the previous generation, nor can they adjust to the thinking of the new generation! For them, marriage as an institution, is outdated and live-in relationship is unthinkable!!</span></div>
<div id="_mcePaste"><span style="font-size: medium;">The play raises innumerable questions and confusions about the fundamentals of the relationship &amp; companionship. Does this confusion end with self realization? Are they afraid of reality? Has the virtual reality become more comfortable??&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230; Another option for all the prevailing relationships!</span></div>
<div><span style="font-size: medium;"><br />
 </span></div>
<div id="_mcePaste"><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>Director’s Note:</strong></span></div>
<div id="_mcePaste"><span style="font-size: medium;">In today’s world, communication via internet, mobiles, television, radio and many more modes is growing fast, but are we really “communicating” to each other by using all these modes or are we using them as an escape to cover up? If one is late for a meeting, one prefers sending a text message than actually facing the person. When one is chatting, he/she is different than the face to face reality.  This play is about two people in their 40&#8217;s. We tried to explore their insecurities, complexities and zest to get into a relationship as both of them have failed in their previous relationships &amp; to avoid the reoccurrence of failure they are very much keen but skeptical about the expectations from their partner.</span></div>
<div id="_mcePaste"><span style="font-size: medium;">As a writer &amp; director, the new thought in the script of searching one more option to the prevailing marriage system, was an interesting factor to direct this play. Also using colours of MICROSOFT WINDOWS for the set colour scheme, using white light, and short sentence talks are some tools used to portray the content. The characters’ approach is touch and go about all issues. This way we wanted to project how the present generation has become so fast in everything.</span></div>

<div id="_mcePaste"><em><span style="font-size: medium;"><a rel="attachment wp-att-1449" href="http://www.metawards.com/plays/2010/spinal-cord/attachment/spinal-cord-2/"><img class="alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-1449" src="http://www.metawards.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/Spinal-cord-100x100.jpg" alt="" width="100" height="100" /></a>Spinal Cord</span></em><span style="font-size: medium;"> narrates the story of a murder and its tragic consequences in a township.</span></div>
<div id="_mcePaste"><span style="font-size: medium;">Twenty seven years after the incident the victim’s mother wakes up from a haunting nightmare with unpleasant memories of her son. Through the faded memories of the 80 year old mother, we start to know the tragic story of her son and the entire consequences of that honor killing. The play develops through the narration of the mother which often oscillates between past and present.</span></div>
<div id="_mcePaste"><span style="font-size: medium;">When the newlywed Angela and Kunjavaran retire to their wedding night, Kunjavaran discovers that his new wife is not a virgin. Shocked and angry, he returns Angela to her family home that very night, where her humiliated brother beats her savagely and demands to know her violator and she names Nasar. Nasar is unaware of the allegations that have been cast against him. But with Angela’s brother bent on avenging their family honor, the whole town is abuzz. They all know whom he plans to kill, where and when.</span></div>

 </span></div>
<div id="_mcePaste"><strong><span style="font-size: medium;">Director’s Note:</span></strong></div>
<div id="_mcePaste"><span style="font-size: medium;">I want to respond to the gestures of the society I live in, a contemporary living society. I want to emphasize this, I want to do theatre to challenge, insinuate and communicate with the society I live in RIGHT NOW. I hope <em>Spinal Cord</em> will make this point more loudly. Both form wise and content wise. <em>Spinal Cord</em> is not just a murder story of an unfortunate victim. It’s a story of an unfair society which is struggling to reconnect its broken spine to reminisce the memories of an avoidable incident which devastated the lives of many.</span></div>

In the last few decades Manipur has been witnessing a chaotic state full of incorrigible incidents: the stink, full of rot, corruption, killing, massacre, violence, oppression, and the inhuman crimes under the shield of the Black Law. Against such chaos stood up Irom Chanu Sharmila in the year 2000, with her Fast unto Death campaign. Her campaign is accused of being an attempt to suicide which is against all human constitutions. Sharmila has no plea for respite to the charges against her campaign. However she pleads the official for realization of her cause. The mime play venerates the unrelenting Spirit – Mirel personified of Irom Chanu Sharmila.</span></div>
<div><span style="font-size: medium;"><br />
 </span></div>
<div id="_mcePaste"><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>Director’s Note:</strong></span></div>
<div id="_mcePaste"><span style="font-size: medium;">The world mime theatre today employs various effects portraying meaningful and entertaining performances. India too has a rich culture of art, its manifestations and our persistent effort is on a fusion of mime with all other indigenous art form of Manipur for a more thriving mime performance of International standard.   In this play &#8211; above the facial gestures, powerful body movements are used for a more poignant enactment of violence inherent in the play. Moreover evocative costume, music, light, set and props are employed to project the present situation of Manipur. The play also provides a platform for the deaf and mute artists to exercise and bring forth their artistic skill.</span></div>

The girl is exceptionally gifted-<em>‘lotus blooms in her steps, the cuckoo sings in her gaze and she has only to wish, and it rains.’</em> The villagers, battling a drought, arrange a ritualistic marriage of frogs to invoke rain; but it pours only when Ghunusa breaks into a dance. Damodar, Shubha’s brother, is also besotted by Ghunusa and asks for her hand in marriage. Ghunusa’s brother, Gambhir, unhappy with the proposition, proposes that Ghunusa marry the man whose buffalo emerges winner in the buffalo fight. Shubha’s buffalo wins; Ghunusa confesses her love for Shubha; Putuli, Damudar’s neglected wife is invited into the fold, as the community joyously celebrates the renewal of life.</span></div>

 </span></div>
<div id="_mcePaste"><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>Director’s Note:</strong></span></div>
<div id="_mcePaste"><span style="font-size: medium;">The Bihu festival is an integral part of Assamese society. The three Bihus, performed at different times of the year, herald new seasons, new agricultural/ farming cycles, with the Bihu songs and dances celebrating the vegetation myth in myriad ways. The very essence of this music and dance reflects our longings, the need for life to germinate, and the inextricable link between Nature and Man. Every Assamese child grows up with the spirit of Bihu deeply entrenched in his/her psyche. After my stint at the National School of Drama, I longed to do a play that would reflect the very essence of the Assamese way of life. I am grateful to Leela Gogoi for the novel <em>Noi Boi Jai</em>, the inspiration behind this production; and to the playwright Pankaj Jyoti Bhuyan for being a consant source of encouragement.</span></div>

<div id="_mcePaste"><span style="font-size: medium;"><em><a rel="attachment wp-att-1512" href="http://www.metawards.com/plays/2010/garbo/attachment/garbo-5-2/"><img class="alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-1512" src="http://www.metawards.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/GARBO-51-100x100.jpg" alt="" width="100" height="100" /></a>Garbo</em><span style="font-size: medium;"> is about the class of ‘young people’ living aimlessly with frustration of shattered dreams, the diffusion of mediocrity, and the burden of inhibitions. A play about the generation which breaks out into defiance of living out their own lives with non-conformism for a credo; throwing up in the process a small minority culture, containing within itself its own seeds of destruction. The drama in Garbo grows out of a claustrophobic real-life situation pushed to the limits of endurance, burgeoning into a surreal holy dream that is too unreal and brittle to stand the test.</span></span></div>
<div><span style="font-size: medium;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><br />

<div id="_mcePaste"><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong><span style="font-size: medium;">Director’s Note:</span></strong></span></div>
<div id="_mcePaste"><span style="font-size: medium;">Making Garbo has been a challenging and exciting experience. Although the idealism portrayed in it may not seem contemporary, I feel it lies beneath our skins, and hence arises the need to peel that skin off. Garbo has been a bold, mature and multi-layered process for us driven by a desire to put something which has been rejected 40 years ago in an alternative aesthetic.</span></div>
<div id="_mcePaste"><span style="font-size: medium;">The play made us scrutinize form, undermined our own working methods, relinquished normal patterns of devising and questioned what kind of verbal, textual language we want to speak. We have loved making this piece that is utterly pessimistic in its optimism, humorous in its tragedy, unusual in the voice it has found &#8211; a strange and complex next step to my past work.</span></div>

<div id="_mcePaste"><span style="font-size: medium;"><a rel="attachment wp-att-1519" href="http://www.metawards.com/plays/2010/a-chik-a-song/attachment/a-chik-a-song3/"><img class="alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-1519" src="http://www.metawards.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/A-CHIK-A-SONG3-100x100.jpg" alt="" width="100" height="100" /></a>The Play <em>A–Chik A-Song</em> is based on the socio- political history of the Garo Hills during 1870-1872 with special reference to the glorious first and the last arms struggle of the Garos against the British.</span></div>
<div id="_mcePaste"><span style="font-size: medium;">It starts with the traditional, cultural and social activities, rituals and beliefs of the remote hilly Garo village. But when the British gradually entered into the interiors of the Garo Village, about fifty Garo independent villagers revolted against the British Policy of Invasion.  The hero of the episode was Toggan Nigminza, a glamorous youth of the entire region who organized, and trained a group of Garo youths. They attacked the British camp and fought for freedom of Garo Hills. Toggan sacrificed his life for the cause of the freedom of his motherland. The Garos still remember him with great honor as the First National Hero and the martyr of the Garos.</span></div>
<div><span style="font-size: medium;"><br />
 </span></div>
<div id="_mcePaste"><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>Director’s Note:</strong></span></div>
<div id="_mcePaste"><span style="font-size: medium;">A feeling of doubt and hesitation encircled me when I was going to direct the first Garo play in a village Purakhashia in West Garo Hills in Meghalaya.  Garo is a tribe; magic, evil belief etc. have been prevalent among the Garos since long past. There are areas in Garo Hills where medical science and modern facility has yet to step in. Garo people are still adorned with their old traditions and culture. Inspite of all this, I did cope with the thoughts, language, traditions and customs of the Garos during my short stay in that remote Garo Village.</span></div>
<div id="_mcePaste"><span style="font-size: medium;">In the drama in question, ‘Thogan’- the Hero of the Garo Community is the principal character which represents the heroism and bravery of the Garos. Various characters in the play reveal love, the evil beliefs, proverbs, religious scriptures and incantations (tantra-mantras), fun making and social customs and consideration that are prevalent in the Garo Society. And it shows how Thogan is still hero-worshipped by the tribe; especially by the youth and children.</span></div>
