Synopsis

Based on Lydia Avilova’s memoirs, Chekov in my Life reveals the very personal life of Anton Chekov the renowned Russian writer. Depicting Lydia’s 10-year relationship with the 29-year-old Chekov, from 1889 to 1899 when he emerges as a literary figure, her memoirs contain references in particularly to Chekov’s most famous play The Seagull.
Lydia A. Avilova was born in Moscow in 1864. She was only twenty-five, already married and mother of a nine month old boy when she first met Chekov. In the account of her relations with Chekov, published several years after her death in 1942 at the age of 78, under the title of Chekov in my Life, she describes only eight meetings with Chekov between 1889 and 1899, but it is clear from the text that they must have met much more often.
