Garbo

2nd March 2010 at Kamani Auditorium, 7:30pm

Producer: Aasakta Kalamanch
Director: Mohit Takalkar
Language: Marathi
Duration:   1 Hour 35 Minutes

Garbo is about the class of ‘young people’ living aimlessly with frustration of shattered dreams, the diffusion of mediocrity, and the burden of inhibitions. A play about the generation which breaks out into defiance of living out their own lives with non-conformism for a credo; throwing up in the process a small minority culture, containing within itself its own seeds of destruction. The drama in Garbo grows out of a claustrophobic real-life situation pushed to the limits of endurance, burgeoning into a surreal holy dream that is too unreal and brittle to stand the test.

DIRECTOR’S NOTE:
Making Garbo has been a challenging and exciting experience. Although the idealism portrayed in it may not seem contemporary, I feel it lies beneath our skins, and hence arises the need to peel that skin off. Garbo has been a bold, mature and multi-layered process for us driven by a desire to put something which has been rejected 40 years ago in an alternative aesthetic. The play made us scrutinize form, undermined our own working methods, relinquished normal patterns of devising and questioned what kind of verbal, textual language we want to speak. We have loved making this piece that is utterly pessimistic in its optimism, humorous in its tragedy, unusual in the voice it has found – a strange and complex next step to my past work.
