Je Janlagulor Akash Chilo

Je Janlagulor Akash Chilo

Je Janlagulor Akash Chilo embodies the romance of Calcutta’s bygone years, punctuated with love, bittersweet arguments, wrapped in a blanket of melancholy. Four friends from the nineties - Shoma, Tatin, Buban and Tubai - long for the childhood they have lost. The play meanders through the ebb and flow of life, and asks the question - will the four protagonists find each other again as they tackle life’s vicissitudes?

Je Janlagulor Akash Chilo embodies the romance of Calcutta’s bygone years, punctuated with love, bittersweet arguments, wrapped in a blanket of melancholy. Four friends from the nineties - Shoma, Tatin, Buban and Tubai - long for the childhood they have lost in their compulsion to grow up. Even though huge skyscrapers rob them of the view of the blue skies of innocence, they still seek a huge chunk of the sky from the highest floors of their building. The play depicts how none of us can ever reclaim our childhood locales, people and memories. It meanders through the ebb and flow of politics and the zeitgeist of the time, and asks the question - as the four protagonists tackle their way through life, will their paths cross again or will the haze caused by their politics, consciousness, and perception forever obscure the windows which once held the blue sky of their friendship?

A harsh reality of life is that childhood remains in childhood. As we grow older, the memories of those innocent days blur and a different consciousness comes like a villain to stand between those who were once bosom buddies. Things like politics, and perception relentlessly create distance between friends. I have seen a lot of films about friendship, but never a large-scale play on this theme. For the longest time, I wanted to make such a play that deals with some beautiful moments, and processes relationship dynamics and situations. Living and cohabiting with this play for the last few  months I realised that friendship is also about  looking out for that friend with whom you played hide and seek as a child, May friendship survive; may it thrive.
